Divers paradise: Bonaire, Caribbean Islands
08/08/2005
Need a break from everyday routine? If you look for a wonderful, calm, unspoiled and not too touristic a place - then you absolutely need to visit Bonaire. Located in the Caribbean Sea, close to the shore of Venezuela, the island is a treasure for people who enjoy being on a quiet beach, dive the exciting underwater world, windsurfing on the shores of the southern part of the island is just a must as well! Or better dinner on the sea-side and just relax….

Scuba diving in the crystal clear water is just an unforgettable adventure. The sport has become extremely popular in the last two decades, due in part to places like Bonaire, which has taken great pains to preserve the underwater world by establishing one of the first marine parks in the Caribbean. The other reason Bonaire has become such a popular destination is the wide variety of fish life and the ease of diving that the island offers.

Bonaire's pristine reefs and diverse marine life are unique to the Caribbean. Because the waters around Bonaire have been protected by an actively managed marine park for the past 25 years, Bonaire today ranks amongst the top four best diving destinations in the world. The island's location in the south Caribbean gives it an arid climate with little rain fall; consequently, the waters are exceptionally clear of silt, calm, and diveable year round. It is an ideal destination for underwater photographers. Water temperatures average a warm 25.6-28.9°C, with visibility averaging over 30m, and frequently reaching up to 50m.

Lanzarote - Dance of the volcano
08/03/2005
The island of Lanzarote is a very special place - where the earth is black and hot, the volcanos still active. But despite all these deserted lands - there are spots were wine and olive trees are growing and mainly cactuses are winning over the black volcano stones. Definitively, an islands to discover and worth a trip! As for diving - this is very special but rather cold! The Atlantic Ocean is in no way comparable with the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Nevertheless, it holds a variety of aquatic life. All kind of shellfishes are populating the sea, Barracuda in schools are patrolling the depths, accompanied by smaller fishes. Sometimes one is also lucky enough to see dolphins. It is a real challenge and adventure to dive the Atlantic - and a lot of fun too!

"If sharks die - the sea dies" Andy Cobb, Ambassador SA
07/29/2005
Isn't it true that since Jaws mainly all of us have this little fear when swimming in the ocean? We all know it's just a movie, but nevertheless… Since Steven Spielberg's movie a lot of science work has been done to understand sharks. Even nowadays, we do not know how many more species are still hidden in the dephts of the seas. We learnt a lot - thanks to dedicated people like Dr. Erich Ritter, a Swiss biologist from Zurich, who works and teaches in the US. He is one of the distinguished scientists in regard to sharks. Thanks to Erich and his colleagues, a lot of new perceptions were discovered and help to understand the behavior of sharks more and more. Sharks are not the blood-lusting animals as most of us used to think. Mostly they are rather shy and mainly not life-threatening in regard to humans. However, there are some species, who are perfect predators and can get dangerous. Always keep in mind when you enter the sea: this is wilderness! and you would not walk alone in a cage full of tigers, wouldn't you, without taking measures. Preparation and understanding is everything. Respect the sharks - but don't fear them. Today, a diver can be very lucky to be able to see sharks swimming - due to overfishery they are almost at the point of extinction. Without sharks - the balance of the oceans will be tipped over and this will result in a ecological disaster. Please help us to PROTECT the SHARKS
